This course is designed to strengthen participants' awareness and response to students who are victims of violence and aggression in our schools, as well as students who respond to conflicts and difficulties with undue aggression and bullying behavior. CASEL defines Social and Emotional Learning as the 'process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and share empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.' Five core competencies in this framework include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and decision making. This course engages with each of these areas, covering the human concerns of self-regulation, frustration tolerance, aggression, passivity and responses to life's challenges and difficulties. Various forms of prevention and intervention within the classroom, campus and larger school community will be explored. This course meets the requirements of national standards related to school environment, developmental instruction, classroom management, family support and guidance and advisement to students.

NOTE: Required book must be acquired separately.

This course is applicable towards the Social Emotional Learning Certificate.

Educators are among the most important and influential members of our society. Along with families and religious communities, our teachers, administrators, coaches and counselors have a critical impact on the shaping of our children and youth. In my years as a school counselor, I have been deeply impressed that as teachers work to meet the academic and educational needs of their students, they also feel increasing demands to meet students’ social, cultural, emotional and behavioral needs as well. My courses are designed to assist educators in addressing these challenging concerns by providing both helpful and relevant theoretical information as well as very practical, hands-on resources.
